I got to head out to Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula to shoot the Delta Farm Tour for PCC Farmland Trust. PCC Farmland Trust secures, preserves and stewards threatened farmland in the Northwest, to ensure that generations of local farmers productively farm it using sustainable, organic growing methods. The Trust takes its mission one step further than most land trusts by working to place farmers on the property, actively producing food for the local community.
Here is the official blurb about the event:
Join PCC Farmland Trust, Nash Huber, and other local farmers on January 16th as we walk the fields of Delta Farm and learn about winter farming. This event will be a rare chance to glean wisdom from one of the best farmers around, as well as a chance to eat Nash’s famous carrots directly from the ground (complete with organic dirt)!
We’ll bus around 400 acres of farmland managed by Nash’s Organic Produce and tour their unique year-round operation. Since 2000, Sequim’s population has grown over 30%, and the uncommonly valuable farmland surrounding the city has been increasingly developed and subdivided. Hear what local farmers have to say about this issue and the other trends and challenges facing sustainable agriculture in our region.
Nash Huber, winner of the 2008 Steward of the Land award, farms organically in the Dungeness River Valley. Nash and his wife Patty McManus are dedicated preservation advocates in Clallam County. For more on Nash and his farm, visit nashsorganicproduce.com.
There were 3 busloads full of PCC Farmland Trust donors, event organizers, friends, farming colleagues, garden heads, foodies, guides from Nash’s Organic Produce and me. I was in bus 1 led by Josh and Jared… They were amazing to listen to as they explained the entire operation from top to bottom as we passed thru each of Nash’s farms, culminating at Delta Farm – PCC Farmland Trust’s first purchase in 2001 and leased to Nash.
We had clouds, sprinkles, bright sunshine a whole lot of mud, but somehow managed to escape full-on rain. This tour was highly educational and informative for anyone that is interested in knowing how an organic farm works, where your food comes from, why protecting our farmland is important and how a farming visionary can be a steward of the land, innovator and teacher to future farmers.
