This Saturday I joined superb Seattle wedding photographer Laurence Kim as wingman for the fun wedding of Carol and Mark. This wedding was notable at the very least because it was actually TWO ceremonies in one fun, but long day.

Carol’s parents are originally from Vietnam and the day started with a traditional Vietnamese ceremony. The food, the ceremony, the traditional gowns, and the HUGE turnout from friends and family led to an absolutely unique experience. There was a WHOLE barbecued pig in addition to homemade Banh Choux… My favorite!!

The Vietnamese ceremony was held at Carol’s parents house in North Seattle

The Broadmoor Country Club provided a fabulous backdrop for the girls to get ready and a great venue for the ceremony and reception.

Before the ceremony Laurence took Carol and Mark down to the Arboretum for a little fashion shoot.

I’m a bit of a procrastinator myself, so I can relate to the subject of my latest senior/grad subject Lisa. She hails from Renton, WA and is the girl next door with a natural born knack for posing. America’s Next Top Model? Only time will tell, but we got a bunch of great images from our evening shoot that migrated from the studio to Tavolata for some gnosh and then to Golden Gardens for some seriously golden light.

You may remember that I recently posted here about a shoot of a guitar that was done in the style of Zack Arias as blogged here. Well, Lisa saw the images and was willing to let me have a go at creating a similar set, look and feel. The only bummer was that I had to use shoe-mounted strobes to light the backdrop instead of my Alien Bees B-800’s because I was awaiting an armada of proper sync cords to arrive from B&H. Watt seconds be damned and oh well… I pretty much achieved the look none the less.

I’ve previously espoused my love for Platon here and David Hobby at Strobist.com makes note that Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is another portrait master working with one soft light. Light that I too truly love.  And dude is doing it on film with a large-format camera.  Crazy!
Keeping it simple is something that doesn’t come natural to me… For some reason I always feel compelled to add more. A side-fill. A kicker. Perhaps a hair light. Or a gelled background light. I think it takes a great deal of confidence to work with one light and even deeper than that, a great rapport with your subject.

Starting now, I intend to embark on a series of portraits done in this fashion with an aim to connect on a deeper level than I’m currently accustomed to with my subjects. Any takers? Let’s see what happens.

And Mr. Greenfield-Sanders’ take on backstage portraits during NY fashion week.

And no blog post would be complete without some hot go-go boy action, now would it?
