Welcome

Hola and welcome. What can I say? I love to make images and hopefully this blog will give insight into the happenings and progress I make as a budding professional photographer.

My love of photography has its genesis in the birth of my daughter Ella and has served as a perfect springboard for my ultimate passion... Learning. Thankfully (for my type), the journey never ends.

This love of learning has led to quickly building a strong portfolio of work encompassing everything from weddings to family portraits to private stock galleries to music photography to corporate head shots to... ? You tell me and I'll be there with clean memory cards and camera(s) in hand ready to capture exactly what you need with the style you are looking for.

Creativity has been a constant in my life as my primary career over the past 15 years has been that of music producer and audio engineer. I'm proud to have logged countless hours in the studio to have brought you Grammy-nominated work by David Cross, Platinum-awarded work by Canadian rockers Default as well as local bigwigs Death Cab for Cutie, edgy work by indie cult heroes Juno, Unwound and Sleater-Kinney, bombastic sonic tapestries by Kinski, genre-bending soul from Maktub, amazing vocal performances and songs by Brandi Carlile and have even managed to peel off records for heroes The Posies, Ken Stringfellow and spent time with legacy artists ranging from Joan Jett to David Byrne (Talking Heads) to Izzy Stradlin (of Guns 'N Roses). Whew.

Annie Leibovitz: At Work

Annie Leibovitz: At WorkAs brought to my attention on Strobist here and additionally by the Jackanory here, it appears as if I’m not the only one out there excited by the prospect of this book. I am so excited in fact, that I marched directly to Amazon and pre-ordered myself a copy of Annie Leibovitz: At Work and simply cannot wait to pour through it while soaking up all kind of tidbits and details. It seems as if there are a lot of photographers out there that love to dismiss Annie or can’t say they like her work without wincing and needing to qualify their statement somehow. I’ve got nothing but love.

Here is a person that started out with a simple camera shooting with available light as she traveled around the country with seminal rock bands at a unique time in American cultural history. And while famous for her work during this period, she refused to let it define her. She has continued to grow as a photographer and artist as she produces some of the most elaborate and complicated images consistently gracing the covers beaming at me in the supermarket.

Annie Leibovitz describes how her pictures were made, starting with Richard Nixon’s resignation, a story she covered with Hunter S. Thompson, and ending with Barack Obama’s campaign. In between are a Rolling Stones Tour, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, The Blues Brothers, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keith Haring, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Patti Smith, George W. Bush, William S. Burroughs, Kate Moss and Queen Elizabeth. The most celebrated photographer of our time discusses portraiture, reportage, fashion photography, lighting, and digital cameras.

“The first thing I did with my very first camera was climb Mt. Fuji. Climbing Mt. Fuji is a lesson in determination and moderation. It would be fair to ask if I took the moderation part to heart. But it certainly was a lesson in respecting your camera. If I was going to live with this thing, I was going to have to think about what that meant. There were not going to be any pictures without it.”

The Dillers

I met up with beautiful girl Sonja, handsome young man Jacob, cool daddy-o Blaine and my point of contact, uber-mom Nancy. The scene of the crime was Magnolia’s Discovery Park, simultaneously one of Seattle’s most majestic and sprawling outdoor spaces. The golden sun of a beautiful August night didn’t count against us either!

Debora and Wes Wedding

I recently had the pleasure of 2nd shooting the Debora and Wes wedding at the Edgewater Hotel for Laurence Kim. It was a crazy weather day shifting from sunny skies to focused downpours to inspiring rainbows before eventually coming full-circle back to a glowing sunset over Elliot Bay.

Par usual when shooting for Laurence, I get the privilege of hanging out with the groom and his boys. Wes and his groomsmen celebrated in style with some manually imported Roberto Cavalli vodka in the Edgewater’s Winslow Room. Good times!

Shoes and Linx

The fashion shoot portion of Laurence’s coverage always proves to be the most exhilarating part of the day as a photographer.

Back at the hotel, I had a moment with the bride in the Beatles Suite prior to the ceremony

Debora

And in a funny moment, a man identifying himself as a prince from the royal family expressed that his wife wanted a picture with the bride and her bridesmaids during the formals. Royal family? Kuwait? Saudi Arabia? Hmmm.

Here’s Laurence sharing a light moment after showing the girls a couple of great frames on his LCD

And the money shot from this wedding: A rainbow broke during the dinner portion of the reception. The fisheye was the only lens in the house capable of capturing the entire arc!
