For some time now I’ve been playing with film on my Hasselblad 500c/m or lately on the Contax 645.  There’s something about the tones, the exposure latitude in the highlights and the surprise factor that keeps me hungry for exploring roll after roll.  By the time you read this I will have been on a kayak and camping adventure with my wife and daughter throughout Puget Sound on Lopez Island and San Juan Island.  All I brought were 3 film cameras:  The Contax 645, The Hasselblad 500c/m and a Fuji Instax.  I can’t wait to see what I got and show you the results.

While not heady work, I recently brought the Contax with me while having a casual end-of-summer (don’t hate me for spelling that out for you) picnic at Lincoln park with some longtime friends.  My lightmeter played devil’s advocate while making a few simple, non-fussy frames of the Frampton family.  I luuuuuuuuuuvvv the results.  This is what happens when you combine GORGEOUS light, an amazing piece of glass (Zeiss 80mm f/2) and some film.  Props to Katie at Moonphoto Lab for the beautiful scans.  And you will meet no other family as down to earth, generous, wonderful and as kind as the Framptons.  We’re truly blessed to know them.

Kristi is an Austin, TX wedding and portrait photographer.  Erin is a bad-ass living in NYC.  Due to the distance between them, these best friends threw a dart at Seattle to spend some long overdue time catching up, checking out my city and having fun like only two best friends can.  We had ambitious plans on where to photograph that got slightly curtailed by some fast-moving inclement weather, but we did manage to cover most of what was on our agenda.  The Alki beach cruiser bicycles will have to wait until the next visit!

We just barely made it to Pike Place Market before the vendors where closing up shop for the day.  Maximillien, one of my personal favorite restaurants, were sly kind enough to let two gorgeous ladies and a photographer commandeer the upstairs for a couple glasses of Nicolas Feuillatte.  They wanted to see the famous gum wall <sigh>, but I got a unique spin on this cliché Seattle photo… Thanks Erin – You are c-c-cold!  The next chapter in our story was to try and get on the Alki boardwalk, but dark & stormy rolled in fast.  A couple of skyline pics and we had to run for cover.

By the time we made it over to the Ballard area, I could see the clouds breaking and a last sliver of daylight exiting stage left.  It was nice to spend 15 minutes roasting marshmallows and warming ourselves in the company of a roaring bonfire at Golden Gardens.  Kristi likes her marshmallows crispy!  The girls hadn’t eaten since breakfast or something so we headed to King’s Hardware for a little hipster flair served with our gnosh and beverages.  A frat boy fight next to the skee ball tables nearly happened.  Our server anti-flirted hard.  Patron shots definitely happened.

I love these girls and had so much fun.  Thank you so much.  And thank you for the Twitter DM’s telling me you cry when you watch the slideshow… It warms my heart and makes me feel like I’m doing something right.  The link to the slideshow is found here.  Best friends rule.

Night Moves – One badass birthday party presented by Guernica Events and Jenny Jimenez at Vermillion proved to be one helluva good time.  Matthew Parker from Guernica did an uh-mazing job giving it a fun and jENNYj flair, while Jann the Psychic blew minds and the Frances Farmer Organ Karaoke kept the party hopping.

Jenny pulls a great crowd and there were all kinds of folks I know there:  Daniel Usenko, Laura Musselman, Damien Jurado, Sarah Jurado, Michelle Moore, Andy Fitts, Julie Harmsen, Laurel McConnell, Barbie Hull (best hugger in the world) and a posse from Glazer’s Camera… Norah, Mark and Ralph.  And of course there was about 75 other people there I didn’t know anything about except they could GET DOWN!

And I knew Jenny could dance, but woah… Don’t know quite what to say after she slapped on her tap shoes and rocked a routine that I won’t soon forget.  Major, major props to Korby who rocked that organ all night long.

Here’s just a few images from the evening.  For the full-meal-deal, hit the the NSFW-ish slideshow here or visit the gallery on Facebook here.

I will pose with a bunch of talented and hot ladies anytimes, anywheres! I’m flanked by Laurel on the left and Barbie on the right… Two of my fave gals.

I’m great friends with Jocelyn’s parents and was honored that she and Pete came to me to do their engagement session last August. We had a great time and it was fantastic getting to know both of them better while learning about their unique love story.

Fast forward a few months and I was overcome with joy when they notified me that I would be their wedding photographer. Photographing a wedding for anyone is a monumental privilege, but it carries extra meaning and responsibility when it is for friends and family. Game on.

Jocelyn and Pete planned not one, not two, but 5 different versions of a nice summer wedding in Seattle. Venues fell through, job situations changed, budgets were retooled and through it all they kept their eyes on the prize and never got bent out of shape. Their trials and challenges were easily shrugged off and they never lost the plot or what the point was. God love ‘em.

And then came a serious family health issue. Waiting until late late summer no longer was a viable option. Enter wedding plan #6. Two months sooner than originally scheduled. On Father’s Day.

While I like to believe that I have a unique connection with my clients and that our relationship pretty much means that they’ve decided that they couldn’t possibly work with anyone else on their most important day, I was not sure if Jocelyn and Pete would be interested in toting me along to cover their wedding at the new location in Detroit, Michigan. Yep… The Dirty D.

I am pleased to show you the images from their intimate wedding at the Detroit Omni Hotel from a 92 degree, humid Midwest day. The whole experience has been humbling and something I will never forget. The lessons learned on this trip will make me a better person, a better photographer, a better business and friend to my clients and better at traveling as a photographer. Thank you guys… Much, much love.

Let’s start with an image of Pete’s super stylish shoes and a lovely gift from his bride to be…

Here Jocelyn’s mum Martha is sewing on a button from her wedding gown.  A button from her mom’s dress.  Cool?  Yes.

Because we could, which in this case means we should, we made some frames whilst strolling around River Place adjacent to the Detroit Omni Hotel.  The Day-After…

And finally, here’s one of me with my peeps taken by the officiant at the end of the family formals. I’m 6 feet tall people. Just sayin.

Sometimes in life you run across certain instances of intense emotion and incredible people that take you by surprise and leave you wiping your eyes.  I have a dear friend named Kristen that invited me into the incredible wedding of Melissa and Nathan.  You should check out her post here.

And you would be happy if you own stock in Kleenex because everyone was BAWLING during the ceremony… Myself included.  The sting of salty sweat and tears in my eyes has ne’er been so sweet.

Have a look.  Relive the magic.  Vote for your favorites.  Leave some comment love.  I love to see what y’all are digging and what you have to say.  Much thanks.

Thank you again to Kristen, one of the most amazing people and incredible photographers I’ve ever met.  As I write this post she is nearly on the leave of departure for missionary work in Cambodia.  Godspeed to you girl… You will be missed by many people that love you here.  And thank you to Mel and Nathan – The love of you and your family rocked me to my core… Thank you, thank you.

Through the process of working with Ross at Flosites and coming up with a graphic identity to match my brand, I had to apply some thought to what I wanted my business cards and paper correspondence to feel like.  I’d been standing on the sidelines for awhile admiring the elements Sarah Rhoads, Fred Egan and the Popes were adding to enhance their brands.  And what was the common thread between all of these guys (besides being great photographers or amazing people)?  Ms. Zida Borcich and her letterpress at Studio Z Mendocino.

Here are the 2.5″ square business cards with foil stamping and edge painting. “Woah” is the reaction each time I had one over.

Here are the 7″ x 5″ correspondence cards I pop in the mail to thank clients for booking or for simple notes.

And here are the 5.5″ x 4.5″ folded informal cards I use to acknowledge things like anniversaries.

I couldn’t be happier with either the products or working with Zida.  If you’re looking for something to set yourself apart, you MUST give her a call!

Many moons ago I used to log copious hours in recording studios recording some of the best bands in the Pacific Northwest.  But you already knew that.

I had a sun-kissed evening recently where I got to revisit my music roots and spend some time with Seattle’s The Eternal Fair.  Sun-kissed evenings are the best, no?

I am a lucky man to have such great photographer friends as Jenny Wohrle (via a friendship with Emily G, the best sister I never had) and getting to meet beautiful couples like Megan + David. Joining a friend and second shooting for them is something I never imagine tiring of.  Just ask me and I’ll shoot for you too.

To see the real deal Holyfield, check out Jenny’s post here and a big, big thank you to Megan, David and their wonderful families. And you too Jenny… I woulda just been sitting around on a Saturday afternoon had you not invited me along. Muah!

Holla Jenny!!

I recently shot a fun wedding at the Plateau Club in Sammamish, WA. It was kinda crazy. I suppose Granny rocking the devil horns during Back In Black comes as no surprise to some, but I was taken aback.  This is one frame of about 12 where she is on fire and with the horns locked.  She was feeling it.  Watch out.

Back in March my family and I headed to Chile for a little over 10 days to rendez-vous with some of our best friends that met us from Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was amazing. We started in Santiago:

¿Dónde está la cabeza?

After acclimating to the fantastic city, we headed out to the coast where we made a private residence in Con Con our home base. Trips up and down the coast included stops in posh Viña del Mar, gritty Valparaiso, transient Renaca and our little slice of heaven, Zapallar.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than the song of fools.

The incomparable Zapallar. This place was like a mix of Carmel, CA and Vernazza, Italy. The only other people in town were the housekeepers and gardeners in the hillsides. We were parked at Restaurant Cesar for hours and hours enjoying Sauvignon Blanc, machas a la parmesana and giant bowls of cleaned crab for $9. This beach is one of the top 5 spots I’ve visited on earth.

Headed to the Maipo Valley to meet our host, Maria Christina Fuentes of Haras de Pirque for some wine tasting. Haras de Pirque is one of the “string of pearls” owned by Chateau Ste. Michelle, my wife’s employer. It is a working thoroughbred stud farm and amazing winery. Carménère y Cabernet oh my!

Maria Christina took us to a rustic country institution called La Vaquita Echá where we were treated to a lovely lunch featuring an amazing indoor parrilla and some traditional Chilean dancing known as Cueca.

The view from Cerro San Cristobal back in Santiago.

Chile is a fantastic country full of beautiful people that we plan to revisit as soon as possible. It’s full of so much diversity and beauty that we’re really only scratched the surface.

You may want to see the Viña Del Mar Lookbook session, Valparaiso Engagement session or the Santiago Engagement session done while there.

Thanks for looking!
